The Pointy Edges of Transformation

How do you know you’re pushing up against true transformation?

It gets uncomfortable.

If you’re aware of your own personal energy as well as the broader group dynamic, you’ll probably have noticed we seem to be in a pretty turbulent patch.

Job losses, relationship friction, anxiety, a sense of being unsettled and lacking direction, fatigue, sleep issues … all of these things seem to be surfacing for many people over the last few months.

So it’s a good time to remember what the journey of true transformation really looks like. It’s a good time to remember that entering into, or at least being open to, the deep exploratory work of self development can bring up some pretty uncomfortable feelings, emotions and life situations.

And that is perfect. More than perfect, it means you’re on the right track.

Because while we all like being in a love cocoon, the deeper work requires more of you and more of your soul.

The deeper work is to go beyond the “love and light” and into the shadow; into those areas we have very cleverly pushed away or disassociated from because none of us like to admit we too own thoughts, feelings, patterns and behaviours that we’re uncomfortable embracing.

They’re often the actions or behaviours we judge in others, so when we consciously or unconsciously behave in exactly the same way (which we all do!), we can often head straight to blame. Let’s face it, vulnerability is a scary place and for most of us, fairly uncharted territory.

The true growth work comes from acknowledging when we feel lost or confronted or scared or wanting to run away or make up excuses to let ourselves off the hook.

It’s natural to want to protect our safety barriers and comfort zones, but if we never push out against our set opinions or beliefs, or never take responsibility for our own actions or reactions to situations we’d ordinarily blame others for, then we will never break free of our limitations. We will never discover how truly limitless we really are.

So this is a time to embrace vulnerability even when you want to run and hide. A time of going in and seeing the part you play in the story of your life and its many interactions. A time of bumping up against the pointy edges and of sitting in the discomfort and instead of reacting, pausing and acknowledging this is where the true transformation begins.
